San Juan Bautista

Noche de San JuanThis year the infamous "Noche de San Juan" falls on Saturday night. Let's Party! While I've celebrated on June 23rd before, its history had never occurred to me. What is so important about that date?

Well first of all, June 24th marks the change from the end of spring and the beginning of summer. This historically marked the longest day (well depending on your hemisphere) of the year, or what is called the summer solstice, midsummer.

"Midsummer, may refer to the period of time centered upon the summer solstice and the diverse celebrations of it around the world, but more often refers to European celebrations that accompany the summer solstice, or to Western festivals that take place in June and are usually related to Saint John the Baptist." courtesy of Wikipedia.
