Golfing sunsetOver the next six days, the Puerto Rico Golf Association will be conducting their annual junior and amateur golf tournaments. First up is the 2007 Johnnie Walker Puerto Rico Amateur Open. The tournament is being played at the Palmas del Mar Country Club, Flamboyan course. The 77 person field consists of Mid-Amateur Champion Rob Slavonia and Senior Champion Elvin Gonzalez, Sr. Other players include, NCAA Division I All-Conference Team pick Rafa Campos and past champions Mike Santin and Mauricio Muniz. This is the first year since 2004 that the tournament is open to players outside of Puerto Rico. The last round of golf is scheduled for Sunday June 3rd.

So far, after one round of golf, the leader is Susin Velez, who posted a two-under-par 70 on Palmas del Mars Flamboyan Course. Velez fired birdies on four holes in the back nine including back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to finish at three-under-par 33.

The next tournament scheduled is the 2007 Junior Island Championship. The tournament will be June 4th through June 6th. The junior championship will be held in the Coco Beach Golf & Country Club. The PRGA Junior Program holds monthly tournaments for players, ages 6 to 18 who are members of the Junior Program, culminating in this championship event.

There are three age categories in the junior program, 18 & Under, 15 & Under, 13 & Under, 11 & Under, 9 & Under, and 7 & Under. During the tournament, there will not be a maximum of strokes. The schedule of events for the championship are:

  • Monday, June 4 - Rd. 1 for Ages 12-18
  • Tuesday, June 5 - Rd. 2 for Ages 12-18, Rd. 1 for Ages 11 & Under. Cut for Ages 12-18
  • Wednesday, June 6 - Final Round for all age groups.
