Renovation of Martineau Bay Resort & Spa is Delayed

Martineau Bay Resort & SpaRecently the Martineau Bay Resort & Spa announced that they would not be closing in April as they had previously planned, but they would wait until August 5th to close. According to Rabín Ortiz, the general manager of the hotel, they are not ready and will close when they are ready to start the remodeling work.

The hotel was opened recently in 2003 under the management of the Wyndham chain of hotels. Ortiz said the the remodeling of the hotel will convert the 156 room hotel into a an exclusive resort under the management of the W Hotels, which is owned by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.

The work is estimated to cost $22 million and they will change the property completely... on the inside as well as the outside. The changes are aimed to make the hotel project a higher quality with a sense of luxury. Additional changes will include new furniture for the rooms, improved modern decoration, wireless Internet, new televisions, and other technology services. The remodeling is expected to be done by November of 2008. During this period, 129 of the 135 employees of the hotel will be temporarily laid off.

This initial $22 million is part of a planned $150 million dollar improvement on the property. While details are not available, some of the planned second phase improvements will include a 27 hole golf course, redesigning the spa and clubhouse. These additional changes are expected to be complete by 2011 or 2012.
