The 49th GRAMMY Awards

Tomorrow all eyes, and ears, in the music world will focus on Hollywood California and the 49th GRAMMY Awards. This year's awards features six (6) Puerto Rican artists competing in two categories: Best Latin Rock, Alternative Or Urban Album (Vocal or Instrumental) and Best Tropical Latin Album (Vocal or Instrumental). The artists nominated in the Best Latin Rock category are:

The Police
will open this year's award show. The Police (Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers) will reunite and perform together for the first time since its 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and if subsequent rumors are also true, the band then will embark on its first extensive tour since it broke up in 1984. With five GRAMMY Awards to their list of accolades, the Police, one of the most famous bands in the world, create a purely original sound by infusing reggae with pop and rock. Sting is nominated along with Sheryl Crow for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for their song "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals".

Shakira will appear on the award show for the first time in her career. International sensation and current nominee Shakira will perform "Hips Don't Lie"; fellow nominee Wyclef Jean will join her. The duo are nominated for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

On many principles, I believe that we place too much importance on music and acting awards. There are just too many. I know that it is a reflection of society and our infatuation with celebrities. In general that is why they interest me. They are a great reflection of culture. In the clothes they wear, the things they say, and the things they do celebrities become a barometer of what as a society care about. I only wish that we could spread the love around and create more awards for science, math, art (non performance based), architecture, design, altruism, entrepreneurship, education, teaching, public service, and environmentalism, to name just a few.
