14th Gran Feria de Autos Antiguos

This weekend marks the return of the Gran Feria de Autos Antiguos Popular Auto in Estadio Hiram Bithorn de San Juan. The show, which will take place February 17th and 18th, will feature more than 1,500 models in exhibition. This will be the 14th edition of the car show for the Club de Dueños de Autos Antiguos de Puerto Rico.

This year's show will feature, for the first time, the exhibition of an electric car built by Studebaker in 1908. The car is on loan from the prestigious "Swigart Museum" in Pennsylvania. There were only two electric Studebaker cars ever created, one called "Peg" and the other called "Tommy". I'm not sure which one is coming to Puerto Rico.

This year's event will also have a special 50th anniversary commemoration of the 1957 Chevrolet. There will be a giant tent exhibiting the best examples of the 1957 Chevy in Puerto Rico. The 57 Chevy holds a special place in my heart. I gained my love for automobiles and motorcycles (including racing) as a young boy. Some of my fondest memories of my father are when we attended hundreds of auto races, Indianapolis 500 time trials, and tractor pulls. However, it was my brother who is to blame for my love of the 57 Chevy. A car enthusiast and mechanic as he was growing up, he surprised my family when he purchased a wine-colored 1957 Chevy just after graduating from high school. I remember cruising around town in that beautiful machine after he had left for the Air Force. Good times, good times! With its distinctive tail wings, I think the 57 Chevy may well be the most beautiful car ever designed.

Jody Scalley, producer of the event, said that this year's show is dedicated to the special recognition for the quality of restorations done in Puerto Rico. As in past years, the show will have huge tents dedicated to Corvettes, "Muscle Cars", Mustangs, European sports cars, Mopar, Ford Model A's, and antique military vehicles.

The exhibition will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. daily and will feature live music, antiques, and other products related to the automobile industry.
