Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with...)

Early in the morning we'll be startin out
Some honeys will be comin' along
We're loadin' up my woody
with the boards inside
and heading out singing our song

Come on (surf route) baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surf route) take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Come along (surf route) baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surf route) take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me

Let's go surfin' now
Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
(Come on and safari with...)

At Huntington and Malibu
They're shooting the pier
At Rincon they're walking the nose
We're going on safari to the islands this year
So if you're coming get ready to go

Beach Boys "Surfing Safari"

I grew up singing along with that song, but never once did I realize that I'd be living in one of the places mentioned in this song. "At Rincon they're walking the nose" big time this week. Starting last Saturday, Rincon has played host to the 2007 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship. With record participation from over 36 countries, this is the third time Puerto Rico has been the host of a surfing world championship (the others were in 1968 and 1988). Surfing will actually take place at Domes Beach in front of the Rincon lighthouse.

The competition lasts ten days and concludes on January 28th. Ricardo Lucke, president of the Puerto Rican Surfing Federation said that the Tourism Company is the lead sponsor for the event, to the tune of $130,000. According to Lucke "No teníamos un auspiciador grande. Sí me hubieran preguntado a mediados de noviembre, hubiese dicho 'creo que vamos a cancelar'." (Translation: The Tourism company saved our asses)

Puerto Rico Masters of Surfing Puerto Rico are participating and seem to be doing well in the competition as they are leading South Africa by 360 points for the team title. Competition resumes on Saturday. Additional information is available at Rincon Hangout. By the way, the Masters designation (I think) refers to the age groups for the competition:

  • 35 - 39 years old
  • 40 - 44 years old
  • over 45 years old.
