Junte Ambiental 2007

In a new phase of their program "Una Isla Limpia es una Isla Saludable" Triple-S Inc. will sponsor the Junte Ambiental 2007 in the Parque Julio Enrique Monagas of Bayamón. The Junte will take place February 17th from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Over 500 jóvenes from environmental clubs and 320 teachers are expected to participate in the event. Planned activities include:

  • Workshops on how to develop an environmental club

  • Workshops on how to manage and dispose garbage

  • Ecological activities.

Did you know that we here in Puerto Rico generate on average 3.9 pounds of garbage per person per day? Did you know that this amount exceeds what most industrialized countries produce, which averages only 2.2 pounds per day per person? This according to a study published from the Autoridad de Desperdicos Sólidos (ADS). Over 90% to 95% of this waste is deposited in 28 landfills across the island. The remaining garbage is either recycled or converted into compost.

According to Socorro Rivas, President, and Vivian López, Vice-President of Communications of TripleS Inc., "El Evento forma parte de los esfuerzos de la Triple-S para concienciar sobre el problema que afecta la calidad de vida de los puertoriqueños." Translation: We make a lot of garbage and it makes us sick, literally. (As always more or less :-)).
